Bullocks Wilshire was the pinnacle of luxury department stores for
most of the last century, catering to the elite of Los Angeles society
and Hollywood celebrities with exclusive departments and salons. In
1935, the 'Irene Salon' was created, where the gowns of Hollywood
costumer designer Irene Gibbons were featured - a groundbreaking event
in that it was the first boutique inside a department store devoted to
one American designer. Designed in a gray- beige wool gabardine, the
detailing of this highly styled suit is phenomenal, just what you would
expect from a Bullocks Wilshire garment in the 'Forties. The jacket has
a long cut with a strong shoulder line, and a waist nipped through the
use of clever tailoring with pleats and tucks at the shoulder and back.
The front features three circular welted pockets, and closes with four
stunning thread tied covered buttons. The jacket is lined in peach silk
crepe. The skirt is straight and slim, with a side zipper closure, and
is unlined. The jacket has several light, scattered age freckles, and
there is a pin hole below the waistband at the back of the skirt,
otherwise both pieces are in excellent condition. Jacket measures 38",
waist 28", shoulder 15.5", sleeve 23", length 30". Skirt measures
waist 26", length 28". sold
