1960s Tunic and Shorts with Ball Fringe

About the only thing we remember about our childhood summer vacation trip to Carlsbad Caverns National Park in the mid Sixties was that it was hotter than hell outside and freezing inside the cave; the climb into the cave seemed to take forever; and Mom was wearing an outfit similar to this one - okay, maybe it didn't have the ball fringe around the legs. Ah, to be a kid on summer vacation at a time when the last thing you had to worry about was being abducted if your parents temporarily lost you on a tour. Aside from the nostalgic reasons, we love this shorts outfit because it is just so freaking cute. The fabric is a soft, sanded textured cotton, almost like a bark cloth but infinitely softer, in a large botanical print in browns, beige and vanilla on a dark harvest gold background. The A-line shaped tunic top has a cut in, piped shoulder and a mock turtleneck trimmed in a dark mustard (like Gulden's, not French's) gold ball fringe, with an inseam pocket at the right hip. It slides on over the head and has a keyhole opening with a hook and eye at the back of the neck.  The shorts have a back zipper closure, a high waist and are trimmed around the leg openings in the ball fringe. Made in Hawaii by Jr. Petites by Diane, The tunic measures 36" at the bust, 42" at the hip and  29" long. The shorts measure 32" at the waist, 38" at the hip, the rise is 13" and the inseam is 5", outseam 16".  The fabric has taken on a soft, not quite faded character from cleaning (we dry cleaned it, but it might be hand washable in cold water and hang dry), and a couple of the balls are gone from the fringe at the leg and neck, otherwise its in excellent condition  $115
