1970s Stephen Burrows Red Knit Jacket |

More than thirty years after he began his career in fashion design, Stephen Burrows is still a highly regarded and collected designer, though it seems his career has been fraught with struggle and disappointment. One of five American designers invited to Versailles in 1973 to represent the United States in a fashion show-down with France and designers like Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy and Pierre Cardin, Burrows' designs blew away the competition and secured his place in fashion history - at least for a time. Given the fickle nature of the fashion industry, we suppose it's not all that hard to believe that a talent like Burrows would have a career that rises and recedes, but it does make you wonder why. This simply cut jacket in a lightweight tomato red felted wool features exposed seams, a batwing sleeve, oversized patch pockets at the hip, and a single knot and loop closure at the neck to fall open in front. Unlined, the style is pure Burrows - drapey and body caressing, and designed to fit a range of sizes with a sleeve length from the center back to end of sleeve of 30", and a total length of 26". Excellent condition. $265
