From a small town in Colorado, Charlotte Blankenship grew up sewing her own clothes. After college she married, became Char de Vazquez, and moved to Guadalajara, Mexico. The story goes that her husband gave Char her first bundles of suede and prodded her into designing with them. That was the start of Char Leathers - exquisitely handcrafted handbags, jackets and vests in suede and leather, with Mexican artisans intricately piecing and handpainting them. Char is still designing, now in New Mexico, but its her stuff from the1960s and '70s that really rocks. In a rich caramel color, this suede maxi vest is pieced and whipstitched around the bottom in a floral pattern of butterscotch, cordovan., brown, and olive and off-white leather, with a tie closure at the waist. We're showing it on a dress form with measurements of 33"-21.5"-34". The length is 55". The vest has a couple of worn spots at the front hem, and light overall soiling, but otherwise its in pretty darned good condition. $275
