Though trained under the tutelage of designers Pierre Cardin, Jacques Esterel and Jean Patou, Jean Paul Gaultier has long been considered an antitraditionalist in the fashion world (mostly by his peers), designing against the grain and turning out unique and often quite memorable clothing (will we ever forget Madonna's body armour corsets and bullet bras?). Another designer who promotes the notion of androgynous dressing, and though his skirts for men probably only appealed to cross-dressers, Gaultier's masculine styled designs for women are surprisingly wearable. These pleated chalk striped gray wool pants are about as non-traditional as you can get with a boob-grabbing high waist, exaggeratedly low slung inseam pockets and wide leg, but they are a fabulous example of Gaultier's brilliance and his couture-honed tailoring. Menswear details include the aforementioned inseam pockets and a single buttoned welted back pocket, double pleats, button closure placket and belt loops at the contoured waist. The waist at the ribcage measures 25", hip38", rise 18", inseam27" with a 2.5" hem, total length 44". We love these paired with a feminine silk blouse or forties-styled nipped-in bolero jacket. Jean Paul Gaultier for Gibo, they are unlined and in excellent condition. $275
