1980s Thierry Mugler Corset Dress

Almost from the beginning it seems, Thierry Mugler encouraged a highly theatrical, spectacular reputation, especially when it came to showing his designs on the runway. At times that reputation may have overshadowed the clothes and frightened some women away from wearing them.  But you don't have to be Jerry Hall to wear Mugler. White cotton ottoman is strategically curved and seamed, a genius of  trompe l'oeil that visually narrows the waist down to practically nothing, and the back cinching up corset style with a black lace.  The basque cut bodice meets a black poly gabardine skirt that has an invisible zipper closure in the back and two slightly trapezoidal shaped  pockets at the top of each thigh. Influenced by fashions of the 1940s and 1950s with their emphasized shoulders and well-defined waists, Mugler once said he designed for strong, powerful women, but we have to think he just liked making women look like women, and boy, does this dress do it. Sized a modern 40, cinched closed, the bust is 35", the waist 26" - you could add about an inch to those measurements if you don't want to cinch the back completely closed, allowing  the lacing beneath to be visible; hip 36", length 35". Except for a faint, yellow spot (about 1cm in length) at the rear left lower waist, the dress is in excellent condition. $285
